Portraits

Martin is an adept portrait artist. Nearly all of his portrait drawings are executed quickly from life models. Often he will make those drawings the subject of a portrait in paint based on memory and instinctive capacity to capture the sitter’s key features and personality. He also paints portraits in oils and acrylics directly with a sitter in front of him and takes commissions in any style requested by the agent concerned. Portraits of historic and symbolic figures feature in his variegated oeuvre too.

Profumo

This triptych includes portraits of John Profumo and Christine Keeler who got caught up in an affair which scandalized British politics in the 1960s. BBC One recently produced a drama series on the  Profumo Affair which provoked this piece of art.

Australian Rules

Australian Rules football is a big part of life in Victoria. The game also provides an ideal opportunity to explore figure painting which reflects aspects of physical and sporting prowess peculiar to this enormously popular code, and the fans’ enthusiasm and loyalty to their respective clubs.

General

Temptation

Biblical and mythical stories provide an endless choice of subjects for artists. 

Temptation often plays a significant part in the stories.

Still Life

Still life paintings are always popular to adorn a wall in a large kitchen and other living spaces. Martin uses objects on his Silvan farm for many of his subjects and often gives them an expressionistic treatment.

WildLife

Australian wildlife is a frequent subject of Martins’ paintings but he also paints family pets like cats and dogs too. Some depictions of wildlife incorporate an indigenous or expressionist flavour to give them a more interesting edge. Realistic depictions of wildlife and pets are available too.

Landscape

Melbourne landmarks and rural Victoria are often subjects of Martin’s landscapes. The Silvan farm and country-side  is a frequent source of inspiration. Landscapes usually get an impressionistic or naïve treatment or some combination of both styles to impart greater interest and movement.
